Bawa’s Legendary Designs Tour

Explore Lunuganga Gardens

Once the country estate of world-renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, Lunuganga is now a living masterpiece that blends Italian renaissance garden design with tropical serenity. Located in Bentota, the estate features sculpted lawns, water features, and eclectic pavilions that reflect Bawa’s unique fusion of nature and architecture. Best visited in the morning (9:30 AM – 11:30 AM) or late afternoon when light and shade play beautifully through the trees. The gardens are open daily, and guided tours are available, offering deep insight into Bawa’s vision and the evolution of this enchanting space. Ideal visiting months: December to April for dry and pleasant weather.

Geoffrey Bawa Architecture Tour

Beyond Lunuganga, the Geoffrey Bawa tour includes visits to his other significant creations in the region, such as the Bentota Beach Hotel (one of his earliest works), the Brief Garden by his brother Bevis Bawa, and private villas that echo his minimalist, tropical-modernist style. This tour is a must for architecture lovers and design enthusiasts, offering a deep dive into the legacy of one of Asia’s greatest architects. Mornings are best for this half-day to full-day experience, especially during December to March, when the weather is favourable for moving between sites.

Sunflower Arts & Crafts Workshop

Located near the Bentota railway station, Sunflower Arts & Crafts offers an immersive experience where guests can witness traditional Sri Lankan craftsmanship—from mask making and batik printing to wood carving and painting. Visitors are encouraged to engage hands-on with artisans and even create their own souvenirs. This is a great cultural stop for families and curious travellers, best visited during mid-morning or early afternoon (10:00 AM – 3:00 PM). The workshop operates year-round and provides insight into the creative spirit of coastal Sri Lanka.

Bentota Beach Relaxation

Bentota Beach is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic seaside destinations, known for its golden sands, calm waters, and palm-fringed charm. Ideal for swimming, sunbathing, or sipping cocktails by the sea, it’s a perfect spot for unwinding. Water sports like jet skiing and banana boat rides are also available. The best time to visit is during the dry season (December to April), with the early morning (7:00 AM – 9:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00 PM – sunset) offering cooler temperatures and fewer crowds. Luxury resorts and beachside cafes line the shore, providing an ideal mix of comfort and coastal bliss.
