Yala

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka’s most visited and second-largest national park, renowned for its remarkable biodiversity and high density of leopards—making it one of the best places in the world to spot these elusive predators. Spanning over 900 square kilometres of dry monsoon forests, grasslands, and lagoons, Yala offers a dramatic natural backdrop teeming with wildlife. Apart from leopards, visitors can encounter elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, jackals, and an array of birds and reptiles. Safaris are typically offered in the early morning (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) and late afternoon (2:30 PM – 6:00 PM) when wildlife activity peaks. The best time to visit is during the dry season from February to July, as animals gather around waterholes, increasing the chances of sightings. Yala’s Block 1 is the most popular zone, but other areas provide more secluded experiences for serious wildlife enthusiasts.

Bundala National Park (Bird Safari)

Bundala National Park, a Ramsar Wetland and UNESCO biosphere reserve, is a paradise for bird lovers and eco-tourists. Situated along the southern coast near Hambantota, it is home to over 200 bird species, including migratory flocks such as flamingos, painted storks, and spoonbills, as well as endemic and resident species. The park also supports a rich variety of wildlife including elephants, crocodiles, and monitor lizards. Bundala’s ecosystem of saltwater lagoons, marshes, and scrubland creates ideal habitats for waterbirds and waders. Bird safaris are best conducted in the early morning (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) when bird activity is at its peak. The best months for birdwatching are from October to March, aligning with the migratory season. The park offers a more tranquil, less crowded alternative to Yala, especially appealing to photographers and ornithologists.

Walawe River Safari

Yala National Park, located in the southeastern region of Sri Lanka, is the country’s premier wildlife reserve famous for having one of the highest leopard densities in the world. The park encompasses dry forests, open plains, rocky outcrops, and coastal lagoons, creating a rich habitat for a variety of wildlife including elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, and hundreds of bird species. Safaris are typically scheduled in the early morning (6:00 AM – 9:00 AM) and late afternoon (2:30 PM – 6:00 PM). The best time to visit Yala is during the dry season from February to July, when water sources dwindle and animals gather near lagoons, improving sighting chances. Block 1 is the most visited area, but other blocks offer quieter, equally captivating experiences.
